Short Take - GULF TODAY - Dt. 27.11.2010 - Creative Kids
Short Take - GULF TODAY - Dt. 27.11.2010 - Creative Kids
Creative kids
This was a busy week in which the UAE witnessed the visit of Indian President Prathibha Devising Patil.
A few days prior to her visit, Nov.14 to celebrate Children’s Day, a painting competition was organised by the Cultural Wing of the India Embassy. The event was held at Abu Dhabi Indian School. About 1,400 children from various schools in the UAE participated in this well organised event.
The senior participants were to choose any of the four themes - children of the world, save the girl child, the independence movement and the joys of childhood. Grades 1 to 4 pupils were given the themes of “Chacha Nehru” and “my school.” What made interesting insight into this event was the way the organisers made sure to make the children feel the presence of Jawaharlal Nehru. Those children who participated in the event thoroughly enjoyed it as they were well taken care of during the event.
Interests in non-performing arts like painting, drawing and writing give opportunity for children to express their mind and thoughts in simpler ways. Any given opportunity to conduct and showcase such talents should never be missed.
According to the organisers, the painting competition would be conducted every year.
One interesting factor came out of this competition was the fact that out of the 12 winners, 11 were girls and there was only one boy amongst the winners. Sunrise English Private School Abu Dhabi (4 prizes) came out with maximum winners followed by Abu Dhabi Indian School (3 prizes) and Delhi Private School Dubai (3 prizes). St Joseph School Abu Dhabi and Gulf Asian School Sharjah bagged one price each.
An icing on the cake for the winners was that the Indian president distributed the prizes during her visit to Abu Dhabi Indian School.

Gulf News Community reports published in July 2010: Winning entry - Spilt fuel can have dire consequences
Gulf News Community reports published in July 2010: Winning entry - Spilt fuel can have dire consequences
Taking a stand isn't always easy or exciting — but if it will make a difference, community reporters are prepared to come out of the shade and act as catalysts for change.
The newspaper recognises readers who raised their voice on issues that they felt were important, relevant and required immediate attention.
And what goes around comes around.
Today, we acknowledge and award those who shared their experiences and brought significant matters to the fore during the month of July.
Over the past few months, the Your Turn page's Community Report section has highlighted myriad subjects that concerned residents and helped alert the authorities about matters that required urgent attention.
Topics of concern ranged from misspelled signboards to street lights burning much-needed energy during the day.
Readers have found Community Reports to be the right platform to create awareness and turn the spotlight on situations that generate interest and truly impact their lives.
Raising important questions, seeking answers from the relevant authorities and highlighting social issues take effort. And community reporters do not hesitate to prod and poke, if it has a chance of making a real difference.
The community reports published in July were judged by UAE Editor Meher Murshed. The criteria for selection included content, issue, impact on community, responsibility and the quality of contribution.
FIRST PRIZE
Spilt fuel can have dire consequences
July 9
By: Ramesh Menon
Reason for selection:
The consequences of mistakes are magnified if they are made in places such as petrol stations. The community reporter highlighted the hazards of spilling fuel when trying to accommodate rush-hour traffic.
UAE Editor Meher Murshed said: “This is an excellent community report because it raises an issue that is relevant to all of us. We should all make an effort to be careful. I congratulate Mr Menon on his excellent civic sense and urge others to follow suit. Safety is a common concern.”
Profile:
Ramesh Menon is a technical officer, based in Abu Dhabi.
The reader actively promotes and exhibits community talent in the blogosphere through his blog: www.talentshare.blogspot.com.
As a frequent reporter of community issues, the reader said: “I wish, in the future, more readers will find time to write in without holding back on their thoughts, as community reports are gaining immense popularity and attention, with the issues getting addressed and resolved at a faster pace than through normal routes.”

SECOND PRIZE
Danger of contamination
July 12
By: Boban Thomas
Reason for selection:
When temperatures soar, water is a crucial part of people’s day. But what if even that is under the risk of contamination?
UAE Editor Meher Murshed said: “The reader has raised a valid point. Quite often, we leave water in plastic bottles in our cars. Leaching of chemicals in water, in high temperatures, has been known to have a negative or bad impact on health. This is a documented fact. When we see such displays of ignorance, action should be taken.”
Profile:
Boban Thomas is a logistics supervisor, based in Abu Dhabi.
He repeated the need to safeguard water bottles and not leave them out in the heat.
The reader said: “This is a bad practice and I see it [happening] every day in front of small supermarkets wherever I go. I request the authorities to intervene at the earliest.”
Thomas said he hoped to have the issue addressed through his community report. “Also, thank you Gulf News for giving readers a good platform to highlight their concerns.”
THIRD PRIZE
Beach ruined by rubbish
July 22
By: Vijoy V.J
Reason for selection:
In most parts of the world, summer is synonymous with the beach.
When the community reporter came across a large amount of litter in one such spot in Ajman, he decided to write and call for a change in attitude.
UAE Editor Meher Murshed commended the reader’s initiative.
He said: “We should all make an effort to protect our open spaces. Keeping our environment clean is necessary to ensure future generations can still enjoy Nature. The report and pictures bring to the fore the gravity of the problem on Al Zorah Beach, in Ajman.”
Profile:
Vijoy V. J. is a marketing officer, based in Dubai.
A second-time winner of the community report competition, the reader said he was confident about being heard.
“If the relevant organisations and authorities come together with the people who raise their concerns, I am sure it will make a difference.”
However, according to the community reporter, the situation remains the same at Al Zorah Beach.
He said: “Nobody has looked into it yet, but I know it is a huge task to clean up the area. It has been in a sorry state for the past two years. I hope the authorities take action.”

Winner of Reflections painting competition held at ISCC Abu Dhabi on 14.05.2010
Master - Joshua Godfrey
Winner of Reflections painting competition held at ISCC Abu Dhabi on 14.05.2010
Group 3 - Age 7 - 10 yrs.
Please join me in congratulating our participating member Master Joshua Godfrey for his recent achievement.
Talking about Joshua, I remember the first time he participated in Talent Share initiatives in November 2008. It was for the first online competition conducted by Talent Share he submitted one of his drawings. When I met him after, with his father, to present a small gift, which was given that time to all the participating children, he was hiding behind him. Introducing him to me, his father Godfrey told me, he is the only one at their home with a different talent as he, his wife Jasmine and Joshua’s elder brother Jaison are all musically oriented and regularly present programmes and get gifts and certificates. Joshua was that time the one who was left alone without any representation to his credit at their medal collections.
I periodically talked to him, his arts teacher and his parents and encouraged him to participate and present often. His regular participation, his parents effort to put him on drawing classes even while on holidays at Kerala, and the encouragement of his own arts and crafts teacher Mr. Rajkumar at Our Own English High School Abu Dhabi changed the situation at the display at his home.
He is now a regular winner wherever and whenever he participates. I am very happy for you Joshua, God bless you and your talent to grow to greater heights.

Talent Share - A talent or knowledge within you is to be shared - 1st Birthday
My Dear readers,
Tomorrow 6th October 2009, www.talentshare.blogspot.com - a simple initiative started to promote creative activities of children and adults will celebrate it’s 1st birthday.
As silent or as aloud, through Team 1 blogs, various initiatives were made all the year along and I am proud to say that till this date, we have witnessed consistent contribution from 57 talented artists of different age. It is also a very happy moment to inform you that 18 schools from various parts of the world including UAE and reaching as far as Doha, Kuwait, and various parts of India participated with interest in showcasing their creativity through www.talentshare.blogspot.com.
Periodically, all the participating children were complemented with gifts and certificates. I would like to say a special word of thanks to Ms. Seema Shetty of NMC group for gifts offered and Charu and team of 89.1 Radio 4 FM for their support of free publicity during the first online competition ever held during last year. It was sheer guts by them to support a totally unknown concept by an unknown personality venturing with the motto “A talent or knowledge within you is to be shared”.
Yes, I believe in what I say, and www.talentshare.blogspot.com is an example of it. What is the benefit of a knowledge or a talent if it remains within us. Imagine how it spread from one person to another to many, if it is shared. The beauty, the enjoyment and the thrill of sharing, it has to be enjoyed. Like a child who keeps the chocolate in his pocket without sharing it with his friends on a hot sunny day, your knowledge or talent, hidden and kept aside for your own enjoyment will melt down finally without benefiting you even.
This is a serious and sincere effort and so far being undertaken solely and I take this opportunity to invite more participation from arts and crafts teachers and those who are interested to volunteer in sharing their valuable talent to come forward and be a part of Talent Share activities. All those who are interested to promote creative talent of children to the forefront through Talent Share blog and its activities to undertake the following responsible roles are welcome to contact me:
- to promote its activities
- encourage the participants
- give guidance and communicate with the participants
- participate in admin roles.
God bless all those creative talents who contributed silently and please pray for their continued interest in participating and promoting creativity which has no special forms in this world of excellence.
Sincere regards,
Ramesh Menon
